A plastic bag, also known as a polythene bag or poly bag is a type of carriage vessel or container made from thin, flexible and nonwoven material or plastic textile. It is the most common type of packaging all over the world up until recent years which sought to see the banishment of these poly bags in parts of the world. Most poly bags are sealed together by means of heat and some stitched or bonded with the use of adhesives.

Uses of poly bags

The areas of applications of poly bags are virtually limitless. They are mainly used in the storage and transportation or packaging of various goods like farm produce, foods, magazines, chemicals and even waste. Poly bags are used to protect their goods content during transit from harmful agents such as moisture, dust and dirt that may damage goods.

Poly bags can be used for plastic recycling depending on their construction and as well can be burned down in proper waste to energy conversion. If these poly bags are wrongfully disposed of say in the environment, they have harmful effects to some types of nature and wildlife causing different forms of environmental pollution.

Some bags are made to withstand the temperature in boiling by making them from tough heat sealed nylon or polyester material used to hold sealed frozen foods. These bags are known as boil – in – bags and some may even be porous or perforated to allow for the hot water to percolate through and make contact with the food or stored material. Medical uses.

Poly bags have seen widespread usage in various fields including the field of medicine where the non- porous quality of plastic material (in this case) ensure they are useful in isolation of bodily fluids. However other porous bags made from plastic material that is nonwoven can be sterilized by gaseous means and maintain this sterility so it can be used when a particular infection is a health risk. They are as flexible as they are light weight and as such can be carried or laid out on patients without making them feel uncomfortable as would have been the case with a glass bottle which would be heavy. Poly bags are a less costly and reusable option for packaging.
